Fibrous Sugilite (also known as Lavulite)
Origin: Africa, South Africa, Hotazel, Wessels Mine, Kalahari manganese fields
Sugilite is a beautiful and rather rare, pinkish to purple coloured mineral found in Manganese deposits. It is known only from a handful of places across the world.
It was named after Ken-ichi Sugi, a petrologist who first found the occurrence of the mineral in Japan.
The photos were taken in bright sunlight to bring out their best colours. The last photo is of a wet specimen to show the intense purple colour.
